Not per se. HotD's role, I believe, is to completely prevent someone from getting votes. Any votes on that person would become disqualified... and people have to re-vote, effectively. So for instance...
Tomorrow, there are going to be eight people (likely). Five to lynch. Let's say Ian gets three votes from the Mafia and one from the Town. Ian roleclaims. HotD believes it, and so she uses her Mayor power on Ian. All of the votes against him disappear, and then the remainder of the time has to be focused on building consensus on someone else.
At least, this is how I believe it works.

At least, this is how I believe it works. No, it simply negates the lynch. The lynch does not happen and it nolynchs, night starts. this is how it traditionally works. It may be different in this occasion, but whatever. also it usually does not work twice. EDIT: on the same person.

Crav has told me that he makes up all of his abilities from scratch without respect to tradition. In fact, that Wiki' page I linked to on Day One? He did nothing more than give it a cursory glance. So it MAY be the traditional role that you described; however, Crav could have changed it radically.

To my understanding it works as TML described it.

Well, It may work like that, but that just gives it less power, because everyone will simply vote again, because one person's ability does not give them sovereignty to change the vote, (at least not in the voters eyes).
It would be good to prove a claim though, but thats about it.
Edit: I R read good.
That gives it more power, but in deadline games it will probably still amount to a nolynch, and, more importantly, it undermines the town's most powerful weapon, the lynch, and basically puts most of the lynchs power into the hands of the one person.
Too powerful imo, whatever.

The fact that Hottie can protect one Townie at this juncture in the game is really all it takes, though. They'll vote for someone else, yeah, but that just means they have another opportunity to hit Mafia.
You're in the box, man! Get out of the box.

That depends on when in the game it's used. Early in the game it would be almost meaningless, but at this point yeah, it's excruciatingly powerful. I think it's balanced out by the fact that most of the time it's an essentially useless power unless you're sure-positive that the person in question is not Mafia.

yes, they are powerful late, but they are hard to use. And, the implementation of this one is funny.

Because you're not used to it as written, I would suppose.
But I mean, imagine the Mayor's power in someone's hands who is less competent. I mean, imagine if Ian had been the Mayor. *whistles*

I mean, imagine if Ian had been the Mayor. *whistles* Actually, if he suddenly got the role right now he'd probably be smart about it, if only because he happened to finger the right guy. If it happened at the start of the game though, he'd probably deny the townies information the entire game by blocking all lynchs he didn't think was mafia.
